Community Outreach

Let’s do something together…

There are many ways to reach out to others in need. We hope one or more of the First Pres projects below will match well with your personal interests and gifts for service in Christ’s name.

Hunger

  • Church to Church (St. Marys Food Pantry)
    • We collect non-perishable food items in the Little Red Wagon.
    • We buy $200 worth of high protein items each month.
    • We deliver goods & volunteer at the pantry.
  • Dorothys Kitchen (Salinas)
    • We make 150 sandwiches on the 3rd Sunday of each month for the food ministry of Dorothy’s Place homeless shelter and drop-in center.
    • We deliver the sandwiches promptly to ensure that guests will have a healthy sack dinner that night.
  • Gleaning (harvesting crops after the professional pickers have finished)
    • We go into the fields to harvest vegetables and fruit three times each summer.
    • We give the produce to Monterey County Food Bank, which serves thousands of hungry neighbors.
  • Monterey County Food Bank
    • In addition to donating our produce from gleaning, we financially support the Food Bank, which is the largest supplier of emergency food in the county.
  • Salvation Army
    • We financially support the food ministry of the Good Samaritan Center, which serves homeless and low-income clients with hot meals and emergency food boxes.

Homelessness

  • I-HELP (overnight lodging for homeless men)
    • We host 25+ men every month on the 3rd Monday and 5th Wednesday; we cook, serve and eat with our brothers as we have for the past 21 years.
    • We are active in I-HELP leadership, fundraising, & advocacy.

* The Gathering Place for Women (Tuesday luncheon for women lacking adequate shelter)

  • We cook, serve, and eat with our sisters and offer a safe, warm place for them to be off the streets for a couple hours every Tuesday.

* Steady Job – Steady Life (a program to foster long term employment and a full life)

  • We meet one-on-one with clients to teach computer skills, practice interviewing, etc.
  • We encourage and mentor clients: as one man described it, “an arm around my shoulder and a kick in the rear when I need it.”

Housing

* Joining Hands Benefit Shop (retail arm of Interfaith Outreach of Carmel, IOC)

  • We donate items, shop, and work in the store; the money raised in the shop is distributed in grants by the IOC which fund programs to keep people in their homes and prevent homelessness.

* Salvation Army

  • We financially support the Emergency Housing Assistance fund of the Good Samaritan Center, which provides assistance to low-income clients facing homelessness.

At-Risk Children

* Angel Tree (Christmas program for children enrolled in Community Partnership for Youth)

  • We buy, wrap, and deliver Christmas gifts to local children in this after-school program.
  • Community Partnership for Youth
    • In addition to our Angel Tree, we financially support the year-round ministry of this prevention program providing positive alternatives to gangs, drugs, and violence, while reinforcing children’s individual strengths.

* L.I.F.E. (Life Is For Everyone, East Salinas)

  • We financially support this after-school program that provides snacks, tutoring, and social skills to K-8 students.
