What is Taizé Prayer?

Taizé prayer uses the common language of music. Short songs, repeated again and again give it a meditative character. Using just a few words, they express a basic reality of faith and the singing becomes a way of listening to God.

The music comes from the ecumenical Taizé Community which was founded in 1940 in Taizé, France by Brother Roger as an attempt to heal divisions between Christians and to overcome conflict in the human family. Today Taizé is a place where hundreds of thousands of young adults from every continent come to pray and prepare themselves to work for peace and reconciliation in the world. See their website at www.taize.fr

We began monthly Taizé prayer services on the Monterey Peninsula in March, 1995, alternating between First Presbyterian Church of Monterey and other churches in the community. We now have four or more Taizé services each year on the second Friday of the month.
